A satire Instagram account called Trash & Purpose posted “PX to Ban Alcohol Sales to Junior Enlisted Warriors.” A repost made the caption look like the cutoff hit every exchange on the planet.
The real order covers Kadena Air Base on Okinawa.
The order
Brig. Gen. John Gallemore, commander of the 18th Wing, signed it Oct. 22. Pacific Air Forces confirmed the memo. It runs through Nov. 8, the end of III MEF’s 30-day Period of Reflection ordered Oct. 8.
For E-1 through E-4 assigned or attached to Kadena:
- No alcohol consumption.
- Off-base liberty cut from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Break it and it is punishable under the UCMJ.
For every dorm on Kadena, every rank:
- No alcohol in the rooms or the common areas.
- Commanders can run unannounced health and welfare inspections.
The exchange signs
Kadena exchange signs read: “Alcohol sales will cease for All Active Duty E-4 and below starting 22 October 2026 until further notice.”
Those signs are at Kadena.
Why
Okinawa police arrested a Marine lance corporal in Naha on suspicion of killing a Japanese woman. He has denied the accusations, according to police. The island already had a midnight to 5 a.m. curfew under the Period of Reflection. Kadena added the drinking ban and the earlier clock for junior enlisted.
Keen Sword
Japan alcohol restrictions also expanded for troops in the Keen Sword exercise. Participants cannot drink on or off base for the drills. There is no ban on buying alcohol under that exercise rule.
This has happened before
In 2021, NAS Pensacola limited E-3 and below to one six-pack of beer a day from the Navy Exchange after alcohol-related incidents climbed. Base-level cutoffs for junior enlisted show up when commands decide the bay needs a hard stop.
For the bay
If you are E-4 or below at Kadena, you are dry through Nov. 8. Stay on base from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Keep the dorm fridge clear. Command can walk in and check.
If you are somewhere else, read the paper on your own exchange wall.
