British police found two men inside RAF Molesworth at about 2 a.m. Thursday, hours after a patrol spotted an abandoned vehicle near the base and officers found a hole in the perimeter fence. Less than two weeks earlier, a separate scare at RAF Fairford ended with every U.S. bomber at RAF Fairford flying home.
Update
- Both men were re-arrested under Section 4 of the National Security Act 2023. That covers entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK.
- Counter Terrorism Policing is leading the investigation.
- Both were released on bail with “strict conditions” on Oct. 9. No charges have been reported.
- Police say there is nothing so far linking it to RAF Fairford.
What happened at Molesworth
- A patrol found an abandoned vehicle near the base about 10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7. Officers then found a hole in the perimeter fence, and at roughly 2 a.m. Thursday they found two men inside.
- Police say the men are Latvian nationals, ages 32 and 36, who live in Britain. They were held on suspicion of entering a prohibited military installation for purposes counter to British national security.
- Counterterrorism investigators are looking at the men’s motives and searching two properties in the Peterborough area.
- Molesworth sits about 70 miles north of London. It houses the NATO Intelligence Fusion Center and intelligence personnel who support U.S. Africa Command.
- The head of Counter Terrorism Policing London said that “at this stage there is nothing to suggest this incident is connected to the events at RAF Fairford last week.”
What happened at Fairford
- At 12:45 a.m. Sept. 27, police got a call about three suspicious vehicles that appeared to be heading toward RAF Fairford. Armed officers detained five men near the village of Whelford.
- A bomb disposal robot checked three white vans inside a 400-meter cordon, and about 85 households were evacuated.
- Police later said they found gasoline in the three vans and no explosives.
- A 25-year-old man was arrested in London on Oct. 1. A 22-year-old British man was arrested Oct. 6 on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. That makes seven arrests.
- All seven had been released on bail as of Thursday while the investigation continues.
- The British prime minister said there were “strong indications” that Iran played a part. Iran has denied it.
The bombers left
- On Oct. 4, a dozen B-1 bombers left Fairford for their home stations in the United States. A defense official said all U.S. bombers deployed to Fairford, including B-1s, B-2s and B-52s, had gone home.
- Some planes took off while tankers were being scrambled to support the flight home, according to one report.
- Two U.S. officials said fears of a complex Iranian-linked drone attack drove the move.
What it means for the rest of us
- Israel warned Germany of a higher risk of attacks on U.S. bases there, especially Ramstein and Spangdahlem, according to a senior U.S. official.
- Locals say barriers were added at Fairford around the time of the arrests.
- U.S. Air Forces in Europe declined to discuss specific force protection measures. It says it constantly assesses which security measures to add or change.
- Police have not linked the two cases. Both started with a vehicle somebody noticed.
