If you’re E-4 or below at Kadena, you’re dry until at least Nov. 8.
The 18th Wing commander, Brig. Gen. John Gallemore, signed the order. It took effect Oct. 22 and covers everyone assigned or attached to Kadena.
E-1 through E-4
- No drinking.
- Back on base by 10 p.m. You stay there until 5 a.m.
- Break the order and it’s punishable under the UCMJ.
Everybody at Kadena
- No alcohol in any dorm, no matter your rank.
- Commanders can run unannounced health and welfare inspections to check.
The BX already cut you off
Signs at the Kadena exchange say: “Alcohol sales will cease for All Active Duty E-4 and below starting 22 October 2026 until further notice.”
The signs say the cutoff lasts until further notice, and the order runs through Nov. 8.
Why
On Oct. 4, Okinawa police arrested a 20-year-old Marine lance corporal on suspicion of killing and robbing a 39-year-old Japanese woman at a hotel in Naha. He has denied it, according to police. Prosecutors indicted him Oct. 25 on a charge of robbery causing death. If convicted, he faces death or life in prison under Japanese law.
The rest of Okinawa
- On Oct. 8, the III MEF commander, Lt. Gen. Benjamin Watson, put every U.S. troop on the island under a midnight to 5 a.m. curfew. It also runs through Nov. 8.
- Two airmen were arrested on a joint U.S. and Japanese police patrol on Oct. 11 for breaking curfew.
- Japan’s prime minister questioned in a budget committee meeting whether the curfew would stop the next incident.
- Okinawa’s prefectural government wasn’t told about the Kadena order ahead of time.
Keen Sword, too
- About 56,000 U.S. and Japanese troops, plus forces from seven partner nations, are in the Keen Sword exercise through Oct. 29.
- U.S. troops in the exercise can’t drink, on or off base, anywhere in Japan.
- Curfew is midnight to 5 a.m. There’s no ban on buying alcohol.
For the bay
E-4 and below at Kadena have no beer and a 10 p.m. clock through Nov. 8. Don’t keep anything in the dorm fridge, because your command can walk in and check.
