A 21-year-old airman from Joint Base Lindsey Graham is charged with hit-and-run after North Charleston police say he hit a car stranded with its hazards on, left his own car and ran toward a Chili’s.
The reports don’t list his rank. We’re not naming him.
Joint Base Lindsey Graham is the old Joint Base Charleston. It got the new name Aug. 10.
What police say happened
- Shortly before 10 p.m. on Oct. 16, a woman’s car ran out of gas on International Boulevard, right before the eastbound I-526 on-ramp, across from Chili’s.
- She was on her way to pick up her daughter from work.
- She turned on her hazards and called roadside assistance and police.
- She told officers he was driving in the second lane and hit her car.
- He kept going toward the I-526 ramp, left his car and ran on foot toward Chili’s.
- Officers found his car empty with his ID inside.
Back on base
- Base police detained him. A North Charleston officer went to the base at 12:50 a.m.
- He told the officer he’d been in a minor crash earlier that night and had run through the woods.
- Then he invoked his right to remain silent.
- The officer saw scratches on him that looked consistent with a trip through the woods. He declined medical care.
The charge
- Hit-and-run involving an attended vehicle.
- He turned himself in at North Charleston City Hall on Oct. 22 and was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center.
- North Charleston police thanked base police for their help.
- He has not been convicted of anything.
For the bay
- In South Carolina, a driver who hits an attended vehicle has to stop, stay at the scene and give the other driver a name, address and registration number. Leaving briefly to report the crash to police is allowed.
- A conviction carries up to a year in jail, a fine, or both.
- If your car dies in traffic, do what she did. Hazards on, call it in.
