Camp Pendleton’s 62 Area dining hall now has a drive-thru window. It opened Oct. 1 under the Tres Habaneros brand, run by Sodexo. Junior enlisted can swipe a meal card. Everybody else pays the 2026 rates: $4.50 breakfast, $7.25 lunch, $6.25 dinner.
Hours and menu
- Open Monday through Friday. Closed holidays.
- Breakfast 6 to 8:15 a.m.. Lunch 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dinner 4 to 6 p.m.
- Breakfast runs egg and veggie burritos with meat add-ons, fruit, yogurt, or oatmeal.
- Lunch and dinner run burgers, chicken sandwiches, and Caesar salad plates.
- This is the second drive-thru on Pendleton. The 22 Area chow hall has had one since 2013. The Army already runs drive-thru DFACs at several posts in Colorado and Kansas.
Why they built it
- Base food techs run a monthly focus group with Marines. Accessibility kept coming up.
- Some Marines work in the field or on diesel gear. Their uniforms get dirty. They don’t want to walk into the dining facility like that.
- The drive-thru lets them pull through and get chow without going inside.
- The 62 Area DFAC itself is new. A $33 million building replaced a 72-year-old chow hall in March. Floor-to-ceiling windows, a pizza oven, a big salad bar. The drive-thru is the add-on that opened Oct. 1.
McDonald’s got it from the Army
- McDonald’s first drive-thru came from the Army. In 1975, a McDonald’s near Fort Huachuca, Arizona, was losing daytime traffic.
- Army rules at the time said Soldiers in duty uniforms had to stay in their cars off post. A franchise owner cut a sliding window into the wall so they could order without getting out.
- That Sierra Vista window became McDonald’s first drive-thru. Pendleton’s version is for dirty utilities and a building you don’t want to track mud through.
Why an E-4 should care
- If you are on Pendleton and your blouse looks like a motor pool floor, you can still eat without doing the walk of shame through the salad bar.
- Meal card works at the window. Off the meal plan, lunch is $7.25.
- Hours are weekday only. Weekend hunger is still a barracks problem.
- Your post might already have one. Ask before you assume the DFAC is walk-in only.
Merch for the chow line
Sitting behind a 7-ton in the drive-thru lane: the Please Be Patient Tee. Never walking inside again: the OnlyShams Tee. Breakfast burrito run: the Caffeine, Nicotine & Hate Tee.
