Soldiers at Camp Hovey, South Korea, say their barracks have mold and bad ventilation. They say they took it up the chain and got told to “spray it with a spray.”
Camp Hovey sits about 15 miles from the North Korean border. The unit in those rooms started a nine-month rotation there on Oct. 16.
What the soldier posted
- An anonymous soldier posted photos on a barracks review app on Oct. 20.
- The post named Building 3535 and soldiers from 1st Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment.
- The photos show a stained mattress and dark stuff on bathroom floors, walls and ceilings. Nobody has confirmed the dark stuff is mold.
- The soldier said the complaints went “to the top 5” with no help.
- “We have soldiers getting sick in these barracks and yet nothing,” the soldier wrote. “They refuse to house us anywhere else let alone deal with the issues.”
The timeline
- Oct. 16: the 3rd Cavalry Regiment uncased its colors at Camp Hovey as the 18th Korea Rotational Force.
- Oct. 19: Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer was named senior advisor to the Pentagon’s barracks task force.
- Oct. 20: the photos went up.
- Oct. 23: the app tagged Meyer on X with photos of the rooms.
- Oct. 26: the garrison and the 2nd Infantry Division answered by email.
What the Army says
- The garrison commander, Col. Chris Choi, said leaders inspected the rooms and started maintenance.
- He said the problems were logged in the Army Maintenance Application before the post went up.
- He said the buildings are set aside for rotational units and the problems were found during the swap between the outgoing and incoming units.
- Public works crews have started on the fixes.
- The division says it is reviewing possible mold, bedding and ventilation.
- Choi wrote that soldiers “deserve safe, healthy and properly maintained living conditions.”
The Meyer clock
As of Oct. 28, the review app’s own tracker shows 9 days since Meyer’s announcement, no deadline and no update logged.
For the bay
- The rotation runs nine months. That’s a lot of nights in Building 3535.
- If your room looks like those photos, put in the work order and screenshot it. The garrison’s first answer was that the tickets were already in the system.
