An Army AH-64 Apache from Fort Rucker showed up late to the Claybank Jamboree car show in Ozark, Alabama, on Saturday, Oct. 3. It hovered over the display cars and pelted them and the spectators with trash and dirt as it landed.
What happened
- The show was set up in a public parking lot as part of the town’s Claybank Jamboree festival.
- The Apache was supposed to arrive before the events opened. Weather held it up, so by the time it arrived most of the cars were parked and registration was wrapping up.
- The show’s organizer said it landed closer to the parking area than it was supposed to. “In every other event, the helicopters have landed either before the car show or not at all,” he said.
- The cars covered nine decades of makes and models. Windows were down and hoods were up because judging was about to start. The organizer said almost every car got hit in some way, inside and out.
- Video shows the Apache passing directly above people near the landing area and over the tops of the parking-lot light poles while debris whips across the lot. One man walks under the hovering helicopter to close the hood of his car.
What the Army said
Fort Rucker acknowledged the damage and told car owners to file claims with the base. The Army said nobody was hurt, said debris from the rotor wash may have damaged several vehicles, and said the late landing was approved by the event organizers and the Dale County Sheriff’s Office.
The organizer got a claims form from Fort Rucker and handed it out to the car owners. He said he isn’t assigning blame to any organization or person. When the story ran on Oct. 6, Fort Rucker had not said whether the Army opened an investigation.
The landing came one day after the Army grounded about 400 of its roughly 700 Apaches over a transmission problem in the newest E-models. That pause is expected to last months.
Third Apache flap this year
- March, Tennessee. Two 101st Combat Aviation Brigade Apaches hovered near Kid Rock’s estate. The crews were suspended, then reinstated within a day.
- July, South Carolina. Eight South Carolina National Guard Apache pilots were suspended over low beach passes during a July 4 flyover. The suspensions were lifted the next morning.
- October, Alabama. The car show.
Why an E-4 should care
- If your car took Army rotor wash, file the claim with the base. Take photos and get a repair estimate before you wash it, and keep every receipt.
- If you get tagged for a static-display detail, the landing zone is the whole job. Get the rope line up and the cars moved before the bird calls inbound.
- If you were planning to enter your 24% APR Charger in the next Ozark show, bring a car cover.
Merch for the flight line
