An airman died Saturday night after falling while rappelling from the rafters of the Alamodome in San Antonio. It happened during a pregame demonstration before UTSA played Navy.
Nellis Air Force Base public affairs said he was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2. He was injured at the stadium and died at a local hospital. The Air Force has not released his name. We won’t publish it.
What happened
- The game was UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces & Veterans game on Saturday, Oct. 17.
- Four service members were set to rappel from the rafters to the field about 15 minutes before kickoff.
- About halfway down, one of them slid down the rope in “an uncontrolled manner” and hit the ground hard, according to local reporting.
- Medical personnel treated him on the field. He was carried out on a stretcher.
- The San Antonio Fire Department said it took a patient with a life-threatening injury to a hospital.
- Kickoff was pushed back about 10 minutes.
UTSA put out a statement before the death was confirmed. “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the soldier who was affected, his family and his military colleagues,” the school said. It also opened crisis support for students and staff.
The unit
Detachment 2 is the Air Force’s Tactical Air Control Party formal training unit. TACP airmen embed with soldiers and Marines and call in airstrikes from the ground. The detachment operates from Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis. Its parent squadron is based at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.
The detachment stood up in 2019. It was set up to cut TACP training from 18 months to 21 weeks. Its instructors teach rappelling at Camp Bullis as part of the course.
