The presidential 747 made two low passes over the White House on Thursday, Oct. 29, for a kids’ Halloween party. The DC Council says the heads-up was 15 minutes.
The flyover
- The jet is the Boeing 747-8 donated by Qatar and refurbished for presidential transport. It goes by Air Force One when the president is on board.
- President Trump was hosting a Halloween party for children at the White House.
- It made two passes over the White House and also flew over nearby neighborhoods.
- Flight tracking data showed it as low as 375 feet.
- The Washington Monument is about 555 feet tall. Videos show the jet flying below the top of it.
The heads-up
- Around 5:20 p.m., AlertDC told residents a flyover would hit the National Mall area within the hour.
- The DC Council said downtown, the Pentagon and National Airport got 15 minutes’ notice. Its post: “It startled many, including us.”
- Airlines got less than an hour.
- Some residents called 911. One posted that they thought a plane was going to crash.
The airport
- The FAA briefly halted traffic at Reagan National for it.
- Some people flying in said their planes had to circle.
- 202 flights were delayed there that day, 26% of departures and 17% of arrivals. Most of the delays were tied to the airport disruption.
For the bay
- Fifteen minutes is about the warning the bay gets for a surprise layout.
The reviews
- The White House posted video of “an epic Air Force One flyover at the White House for the trick-or-treaters!”
- A spokesperson said the FAA “followed all necessary protocols” and the flyover “brought joy and excitement to all those celebrating Halloween at the White House.”
- Sen. Tammy Duckworth sent a letter Monday, Nov. 2, to the FAA, the Pentagon and the Office of Management and Budget about the flight’s safety, cost and airport impact. She wants to know if the FAA objected.
- She pointed to open safety recommendations from the January 2025 midair collision near Reagan National that killed 67 people.
- The president likes flyovers. They often happen at big sporting events he attends.
