An 82nd Airborne Division major pleaded guilty to domestic violence and communicating a threat after holding his wife at gunpoint in their on-post house and threatening to kill her. A military judge sentenced him to 17 months in confinement.
Maj. Isaac A. Gutierrez is a military intelligence officer assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 82nd Airborne Division Artillery. The published result lists no punitive discharge. He will serve the sentence at the Midwest Joint Regional Confinement Facility at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
What happened
- On Jan. 24, 2026, at their Fort Bragg residence, Gutierrez confronted his wife after she returned from visiting her father out of state.
- The argument lasted more than an hour. During it he held her at gunpoint and threatened to kill her.
- A daughter in the house got scared and called her older sister, who was at a friend’s house. An adult there called police for a welfare check.
- Fort Bragg military police took him into custody and notified his chain of command.
The court-martial
- On Sept. 21, 2026, at a general court-martial at Fort Bragg, Gutierrez pleaded guilty before a military judge to one specification of domestic violence under Article 128 and one specification of communicating a threat under Article 115.
- The 17-month confinement sentence matched his plea agreement.
- He is a West Point graduate and earned a Ranger tab after commissioning. Witnesses at sentencing testified to his military performance. That did not change the sentence.
Why an E-4 should care
- Rank and tabs don’t get you out of a gunpoint threat at home. The Army’s special trial prosecutors took it the same way they take junior enlisted DV cases.
- On-post houses still get a welfare check when someone calls. MPs showed up and hauled him off.
- This was at least the fifth Fort Bragg domestic-violence general court-martial conviction this year. All five were guilty pleas. The sentences ranged from 23 days to 54 months.
